Conflict

In our story, the main character is a man named Mr. Pignati. Throughout we see Pignati acting... odd. He seems friendly but the narrators can always tell that he's hiding something. Pretty early on in the text it's discovered that the wife who was "away on a trip" had actually passed away, when we see the main characters find papers from the funeral directors. This doesn't serve as a primary conflict (as the conflict of the text only comes within the climax) yet it has smaller problems like this.

This conflict only seems to be there to add depth to Pignati, and give the main characters a reason to continue to visit him. It helps paint the picture of a sad old man, just looking for someone, anyone to talk to.
